Restoring your ability to swallow
A wide variety of ailments can make it impossible to swallow normally – and in times past, the sufferer was forced to rely on a feeding tube. Today, though, Huggins Hospital uses a powerful new technology that can help 9 out of 10 patients swallow so well that a feeding tube is no longer necessary.
This advanced technology is called VitalStim® and it works by using a gentle electrical current to stimulate motor nerves in the throat. The current causes the muscles responsible for swallowing to contract, re-educating them in how to swallow. Many patients regain full ability, and the improvement generally lasts for years.
This therapy is available through Huggins Hospital’s Back Bay Rehabilitation where it is administered by experienced, compassionate speech pathologists. Back Bay is proud to offer VitalStim® to our community, because our goal is to help you return to your normal life in a safe, healthy way.
