VitalStim® Dysphagia

A wide variety of ailments can make it impossible to swallow normally – and in times past, the sufferer was forced to rely on a feeding tube. Today, though, Huggins Hospital uses a powerful new technology that can help 9 out of 10 patients swallow so well that a feeding tube is no longer necessary.

This advanced technology is called VitalStim® and it works by using a gentle electrical current to stimulate motor nerves in the throat. The current causes the muscles responsible for swallowing to contract, re-educating them in how to swallow. Many patients regain full ability, and the improvement generally lasts for years.
